The City Agriculturist’s Office of Iligan, in collaboration with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Office – Northern Mindanao and the City Government of Iligan, officially conducted a turnover of fishing gears. The total equipment purchased amounted to Php 267,580.45 from BFAR and Php 900,000.00 from the LGU-Iligan. These fishing gears were distributed to the local fishing constituents in Iligan City.

This ceremony signifies the local fisherfolk’s commitment to sustainable fishing management practices. It emphasizes the need to replace or modify fishing gears to minimize their negative impact on marine ecosystems and enhance their efficiency.

This significant event is crucial for promoting responsible fishing activities in Iligan City. Under the guidance of Ms. Marie Ann J. Beley, the City Agriculturist, and Mr. Jay Denson N. Caytor, MPA, the Division Chief for Farm and Fishery Management, along with the support of the Local Government, the adoption of more selective, efficient, and environmentally-friendly gear types will aid the local fisherfolk in conserving fish stocks, safeguarding marine ecosystems, reducing bycatch, complying with regulations, and securing sustainable economic development for their livelihoods.
